We rideshare drivers need to wear a mask

Uber and Lyft both require drivers and riders to wear a mask during a ride. According to the CDC, this simple action is something we can all do to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Even with this information there are still people who are resistant to the idea. Some people claim that wearing a mask is an infringement of their rights as Americans. I think it is important to look at what the experts say.

According to the CDC, cloth face coverings are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the cloth face covering coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voices. Studies show that cloth face coverings reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of cloth face coverings is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to maintain – like in our cars.

If you think that you are healthy and won’t be affected by the virus, then don’t wear a mask for yourself but do it for others – your older family members, anyone with extenuating health concerns, and our health care workers. It is possible you may be asymptomatic and are spreading the virus unknowingly. If you want to see our economy improve and not see a second stay at home order then let’s try wearing a mask.

We tried not wearing masks at the beginning of this pandemic and that did not work. So let’s just try something else. Wear a mask when you leave your house, it really isn’t that hard and it’s not forever!

Tomorrow: Happy 4th of July!
